Everybody, attached is some new software for your Peek, the 1.08 release. What’s new in this release:
1. Performance is much improved (everything should be snappier)
2. Lots of work on date/time – including that the emails now have the real date/time from when you got them in the inbox!
3. You can now set your own date & time as well
4. Device Security Lock. When you lock your Peek, you can have a password to unlock it.
5. Way more shortcuts, I’ll post more later about them all.
6. Typing the ‘character’ in contact list jumps to the names that start with that letter.
7. Airplane mode so you can turn on/off your radio
8. A nice little tutorial on registration (I guess not so important to you users who already use it)
9. A whole slew of improvements & fixes (esp if you are on 1.04)
10. If you are on 1.04 you will lose “Dusk” and gain “Slate” (grey-blue colour)
This software is 1.08. If you are on 1.04 I definitely recommend you upgrade. You can check if you go to Peek Manager->Device Info->Software Version.
This also introduces the new funky Peek Betterment Engine (thats my marketing skillset at work). This is a tool we designed to try and make the upgrade process seamless. There are some important things to know about the ugprade process:
Before you start you must reset your device (you will lose all of your emails & contacts… sorry). Peek Manager->device info>reset device. Super sorry, we will make it possible to upgrade without losing data the next time around.
1. You must have a cable. These are special micro-USB cables with a chip in the end, so you have to get it from us (or google around if you know what you’re doing). You can order one from the Peek boutique here:
http://boutique.getpeek.com/upgrade-cable-for-your-peek.html
2. This does not work on 64-bit windows. At all. There is no way to make it work right now. I will later release a version that works for 64-bit.
3. I’d classify the Peek Betterment Engine as better than beta… but not quite mature. So I’d only use it if you have enough tech saviness that if things go wrong you’ll be ok getting special instructions & software from me to recover your Peek.
4. When the ugprade tool finishes, you must take out your battery and put it back in! Otherwise your device will just sit there and do nothing and seem dead.
5. If you ‘brick’ your device, industry terms for the device not powering on anymore, email Gabe and I (gabe at getpeek, dan at getpeek)
6. Your device is going to be wiped clean! You will lose all of your emails and contacts. Sorry 8-(
Ok, so after all of that here is the link:

Download the upgrade from there and off you go.

Are there any known issues with those of us greedy bastards who bought the unlimited service one-day deal?
Since my cable hasn’t yet arrived (only ordered today), I don’t know if these issues are fixed (I’m on 01.07.01) in this upgrade. But anyway, here is Dvae’s list of UI desires:
-I’d love it if a shift-upwheel from the upper-leftmost position in the message took me to the end of the subject
-When sending to a ten-digit address, I’d love for the “\n\nSent on the go from my Peek” to be automagically removed from my message
-Also when sending to a ten-digit address, I’d prefer no dialog regarding sending a message with no subject
-Am I confused, or is there currently no way to actually send an email to the mobile number stored in a contact who also has an email address stored?
-I’d love a way to select text, so that big deletion of quoted text is easier. Perhaps Shift+’+wheel?
-I haven’t wanted cut&paste yet, but perhaps others do?
All in all, I am flabbergasted how much I’ve come to love my Peek in under a week. How did I ever live without it? Thanks! I’m proselytizing as much as I can without being pushy. I think I’ve got two more sold.

There are no problems for the Peek for Lifers, you can upgrade.

Ok so I have tried the software while my Peek is plugged in and powered on and also when it is powered off. It was reset first. After the software ran through its process I took out the battery and put it back in. Then I powered the Peek up. It is still in software revision 1.04. I have repeated the process several times. What am I doing wrong? Would it be possible to post more of a complete step-by-step instructions set? Thanks!

Do you see a progress updater run that says like x% is complete?
Send me an email.
Gabe and I just shot a video with step by step instructions but in the short:
-start with Peek powered on
-it will eventually say powered off (turn it off)
-it will almost right after ask you to ‘power on’
When you power on here, it will seem like its turned off. Thats ok, it is doing stuff. Just wait patiently and leave it plugged in. If nothing happens after 5 minutes than its not working.
-Then it should complete on its own, i.e. the percentage bars will complete
-Then you just take your battery out and put it back in

Upgrade from 1.07 to 1.08 worked fine. Thanks for the nice updater (and the update).

Will the upgrade software run on a Mac, or does it require MS Windows?

Any coupon codes for those of us who didn’t get a peek in time for the CTP program? I’m near broke after buying the lifetime peek

Sweeeeet… oh wait, thought you guys were sending out some cables?

Loaded late last night after I decided that the upgrade was more important that the Dusk setting. Took about 10 minutes and all went very smooth. No problems to note so far.

I am new to Peek. Do I need a cable to upgrade when the final version comes?
dan | 30-Jan-09 at 12:29 pm | Permalink
Yes, you need to get a cable to upgrade. boutique.getpeek.com
Ellen | 30-Jan-09 at 3:57 pm | Permalink
Hmmm… are you ever going to make upgrade software for the Mac?
dan | 31-Jan-09 at 11:27 am | Permalink
Mac… not quite yet. Unfortunately we have to use some underlying stuff from our chipmakers (Texas Instruments) and they don’t have a version available for Macs yet. We will keep pushing though as half of our office uses Macs.

anyone else having problems when you hook the peek up to your computer? I have vista not 64bit and it keeps making the signature noise when you hook up a USB and it keeps telling me device not recognized, and it keeps accepting and rejecting device and won’t recognize it. Any help?
allen | 31-Jan-09 at 7:38 pm | Permalink
I had to change usb ports a couple of times, but that seemed to do the trick for some reason.
Terry Winslow | 31-Jan-09 at 9:32 pm | Permalink
Are you using an “authorized” cable? Or did you try running the software in compatibility mode?
Mike | 31-Jan-09 at 11:36 pm | Permalink
From my brief experience you need to start the peek updater before you plug in the cable, otherwise Windows appears to install the wrong driver – try plugging into a different USB port when the Welcome to Peek screen comes up.
Brian | 01-Feb-09 at 1:09 am | Permalink
ohhh…”authorized” hmmm maybe that’s the problem then. I was using my LG Dare cable. It charges my Peek too, so just one less wire I had lying around my place, and i figured since it worked to charge my peek it would work when i plugged it into my computer. I guess i’ll need to get the USB from the boutique then. *wires wires everywhere*

The updater seems to be having problems if you have a port number > 10. I’ll try and fix this, though I do think its possible to remap ports in Windows.
Google for the PL-2303 driver as well if you want to install the driver directly.

When I run the “Peek Handset Updater Utility,” It extracts and installs drivers and software, then deletes it all, then says complete without ever recognizing my Peek unit (I am using a cable provided by Peek.) When I viewed the first posted video it looks as though the software that the Peek Updater installs automatically launches. That hasn’t happened for me on two different PC’s running XP. What am I doing wrong?

I was able to update my peek to 1.08.11 via parallels 4 (running xp pro). i had to try a few different usb ports until i found one that it liked and i had to take the battery out twice after it was done (not for the faint of heart but doable).

Finished an successful upgrade but wanted to pass along a couple issues I ran into. First, I had to get around the Windows XP/Vista driver sneaking in before the peek driver by deleting the driver and retrying.
After getting past that, the peek-updater kept telling me to power on the peek, but it was on. I retried/jiggled the USB-to-Peek connection and after a few attempts it did recognize and successfully completed the update.
I’m no hardware/device-driver pro at all, but I did notice that the micro USB on the update cable is a bit different than the standard peek power cable. Is it possible a full contact was not being made with the update cable and peek?

I do not own a Peek (yet), but I will order very soon. What helped make up my mind was that fact that now it can SMS Text. But more importantly is that I am really digging the attitude of you guys at Peek. Your post, your videos, the attitude. I am really digging it.

I have been flashing the Peek for a while now and I don’t think doing a reset on the device is required every time you flash it. It works for me. Should work for you too.
