There is a very broad Linux for ARM movement around the world that is ongoing that has me excited these days as we use an ARM7 Texas Instrument’s processor.
This is the list of the over 2300 devices in the world that have been ported to Linux for ARM variants:
http://www.arm.linux.org.uk/developer/machines/
There is even a flavour of Linux for our ARM7 processor (we use ARM7TDMI):
http://www.uclinux.org/pub/uClinux/ports/arm7tdmi/
http://www.linux.org/apps/AppId_8588.html
So armed with this new fountain of information I’m hoping one or more of you out there in the world can get Linux running on the Peek. Feel free to post here on how far you get.
And here’s the deal, if one of you does make it happen you can have a little mini-consulting gig with us to tell us how you did it and how we could build a Mobile Linux Peek.
And here’s one more link to inspire some of you out there, a list of hacks on other consumer electronic devices and how the hacks have been done http://dev.eyebeam.org/projects/reware/wiki/Reware

Sounds great! Which TI processor are you using?
According to:
http://www.uclinux.org/pub/uClinux/FAQ.shtml#2-7
There are a couple dozen files which need to be adapted to work with the CPU/Platform you want to support.

We use TI Locosto.

uClinux wasn’t quite the same as linux before – but it seems as if the mainline linux kernel now supports some no architectures that don’t support MMU’s (like your ARM7TDMI).
The main person who seems to be doing this work:
http://opensrc.sec.samsung.com/
He seems to be pretty knowledgeable with regards to getting linux running on an MMU-less ARM core.

Why not ask the people at Elektrobit to do this development. I have had direct experience working with them on developing Linux-based mobile handsets for the WiMax market. If your serious about this. I would contact them.

Dan,
.
It could be helpful to do one step at a time. Can you shed some light on how to connect to the device? The Peekupdater actually is quite rich of tools including the tmsh (a shell to log into the peek. My quick test was unsuccesful. I can execute open s3 in the tmsh shell to open the serial port but then any remote command times out) and the CSST so if you can help a bit we can save some time
thanks

I’ve been working with Linux for years & Have tried installing it on different hardware set’s, etc.
I think the Peek might be a platform worth considering. At this time I don’t have the financial ability to invest in the peek hardware right now; but if you have a PC based emulator I could download, I think I could devote some time to testing.

First application? Pine
In all seriousness, are you planning on releasing more information about the devices to aid hacking efforts? Items such as schematics, part numbers, and block diagrams would make it less time-consuming to get started on such a project. Are there ways to hack the firmware without needing to open the device? What equipment and software is needed to reprogram the device if it bricks?
The possibilities are indeed intriguing from a Linux point-of-view: This would be the cheapest Linux device I know about, AND it has a screen, keyboard, and GSM.

1- Would you provide full hardware information? (under NDA, I guess)
2- I’m not in the USA. How can I get a peek?.

Dudes… if you have any interest in selling millions of devices (I don’t know what the margins are on the hardware alone) then modify your device to create a telephone book replacement. One that will replace the physical, paper book. Don’t do any online stuff – except maybe updates of some sort. Phone book companies around the world are getting antsy about the future and they are not going to make any money online. Trust me. They need a physical phone book REPLACEMENT to go in the kitchen drawer.
Anyway – there ya go.

Hello, one of my people saw this and thought it would be something that I can help with. I am one of the devs from the Gentoo Pandora Project (http://gentoo.openpandora.org) whose goal was to optimize and port Gentoo to the TI OMAP3530 specifically, but OMAP3/ARMv7-a in general. Our image is working successfully on the Beagleboard, OpenPandora, Gumstix Overo, and soon the Touch Book from Always Innovating. Let me know if we can do this for you. Email or IRC @ Freenode#gentoo-pandora

sorry, after reading some of the other posts…
We are using a standard gcc-4.3.x toolchain specifically (armv7a-softfloat-linux-gnueabi) not uclinux. CFLAGS have been optimized (relatively, could be tweaked more for your purposes) for ARMv7a Cortex-a8. Right now we have a 0.0.3-base image which will boot and give you a command prompt, currently we are working on 0.0.4-base and 0.0.4-desktop.

All of the info needed to modify the existing Nucleus firmware and upload it is in the updater (thanks!). The biggest problem with getting uCLinux (or anything else) running is that you’re going to lose the GSM stack, unless you have some magic way of ripping the TI-provided Nucleus modules and running them under uCLinux.
It’s still a beautiful device, but I can’t think of any way of significantly modifying the operating environment while maintaining the GSM functionality.

Ah, Cortex-A8 (ARMv7) is way different then ARM7 (ARMv3). See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture#ARM_cores

Now I’m getting things mixed up… ARM7TDMI is ARMv4T not ARMv3

I’ll recommand you few thinks
1) evaluate eglibc (embedded glibc project)
2) choice a good tool to generate and manage your distribution
Gentoo or openembedded
3) Be mainline for your bootloader & kernel to have community support
U-Boot + Linux
4) use DirectFB for the graphic part
5) depending on your cpu create or a little Graphical lib
I’ll avoid KDE, GNOME & X11 to reduce the firmware size and the needed ressource
etc…
but if you want to have a good community around your device try to be open-source otherwise
evaluate carefully what you put inside your distribution because not all software are design for embedded and not specially for handheld (power consumption as example)

J.

J-C PLAGNIOL-VILLARD brings up some good points and I have to agree with them. Most people or going with OpenEmbedded, which has some advantages, and Gentoo has others. I’m sure some people will want to use Ubuntu/Debian also.

Spoke to TI and they need a NDA signed for any Programming Guides, Datasheets and other TI LoCosto(tm) single-chip GSM solution documents. Is that something that Peek could provide us via an NDA with Peek? Or no.

Maybe
I’ll let you know by end of day.

You should talk to the Mer folks (the open version of Nokia’s Maemo). If the Peek had quadband GPRS/EDGE and wifi, it might be quite useful as a low end MID. The only thing I’d change about the face of the device is adding a dpad between the keyboard and qwerty keyboard.

I have posted a bunch of information regarding the TMSH shell and how to build a cable on the http://www.peeklinux.com site
johnkzin | 13-Jul-09 at 8:49 pm | Permalink
Following up on my own comment … someone from the Mer team said:
“ARM9TDMI, low RAM, MMU-less, 104mhz. We’re not going to get anything sane running on it sadly”
What are the chances that you’d be making a Peek2 that had something like TI OMAP 3 CPU, and its family of chips? I’d also suggest a dpad between the keyboard and the screen (sort of like the button arrangements on a Nokia E61, E62, E61i, E63, or E71). That might be a more comfortable starting place for mobile linux developers.

Can we access the JTAG port? Initial U-boot porting should be quite straightforward if we know where the UART registers are located…
Adam | 14-Jul-09 at 2:52 pm | Permalink
Dan, did you find out that info abuot the NDA or some kind of hardware docs for us?
Bob | 14-Jul-09 at 5:22 pm | Permalink
Any word on the NDA? I’d like to assist in porting it to a new platform. I develop embedded linux systems at work – this could be a fun project.

Hey all – check peeklinux.com & elinux.com/peek
They have obtained all the documentation and posted it now. Also check the IRC chat, there is some chatter on there more recently. It looks like cmw is making a breakthrough in booting, so worth reaching out to him.
