So we just finished the big upgrade, apologies again for the outage. The biggest feature outside of texting is that we now support almost all image types.
There has been a bit of confusion about attachments. You can view images on your Peek. Previously you could just view jpegs, but as of today you can view almost anything related to images (bmp, png, gif, etc). As a note this does not require new software on the client, it should work “as is”.
Also, if you forward emails from your Peek we will re-attach any attachments. So lets say you received an email with a ppt. You can’t view the ppt on your Peek, but if you forward it the recipient will receive the attachment.
One of our next “to do’s” is supporting other attachments. The idea we had is similar to a few of the suggestions you all gave. For pdf/word we’d rip out the text and send it as an email, with any images as attachments. For excel we were going to do a fixed width view and squeeze in as many columns as possible. And then as you scroll down the email you’d either retrieve more horizontally or vertically depending on where more data exists.
Any thoughts on this approach? Would it be useful, or should we just wait and put proper viewers on the device itself? The excel approach is definitely the riskiest, we’ve debated holding out until we had a horizontal scroll.
A few other things you will notice from the upgrade:
1. Formatting should look cleaner. We’ve fixed some new line issues.
2. Our email domain guessing has more improvements, we should be up to 80% accuracy (if not more)!
3. The AOL experience should feel a wee bit faster. We also are better handling read/unread for some older versions of AOL now.
There are two to three more upgrades coming in the next couple weeks and then we will be silent until the New Year. Stay tuned!

Would it be possible to convert a pdf to a jpg?
I did a quick search on the web and found the following product that suppose to do just that.
The 3-Heights™ PDF to Image Converter API is a PDF converter tool that can convert PDF to raster image format files e.g. TIFF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP.
http://www.pdf-tools.com/asp/products.asp?name=P2IA
Depending on how readable it was I would prefer to see the pdf the way it was meant to look.

For readability purposes , I don’t think that would be the best idea.
Due to the small size of the screen, I do not think it would be best to try and view pdfs as an image. I would rather see them convert the pdf to text and appened that text to the end of the e-mail.

Funny, we debated this exactly. We thought the pdfs did not look fantastic on the Peek. I will test this some more though.
Would love to hear some other opinions… pdf as jpeg or strip the text out of pdf? Or maybe both (pdf text in the email, image as an attachment).

What would you do if you had an update that required new firmware? Would there be any way for users to get it?
I don’t have a Peek yet, but I like that you’re constantly working on it and responding to the community. More than anything else, that makes me want to get one!

Really, both a jpg convert, AND a text rip would be good, until a proper viewer is ready, but if I had to pick one, a text rip would probably be more useful.

About Word/PDF viewing – personally, I’d be happy with just text and no attached images until a viewer comes around (I’m imagining the lag in processing a 20 page PDF with nothing but images in it…ewww)
About Excel – not sure if this is possible, but in the absense of horizontal scroll, what about turning the text 90 degrees? Might be a pain since the whole spreadsheet would be converted into parts but if you’re in a pinch and REALLY need that info, it’s a minor pain.

My comment about the conversion of PDF to JPG was in hopes that it would simplify the logic on the server.
I guess I envisioned a world where the email was retrieved and if it was a pure text email it would be sent to the peek without any modifications. However if it was an html email it would be converted to an image displayed as an image attachment. I thought that this may be done by converting the html email to pdf and the pdf to jpg. I also thought that it would be possible to do the same with other attachments ie doc to pdf then to jpg.
If the jpg was viewable I think there would be alot of potential with a lot less code.
The reason I say a lot less code is because I believe the code already exists to do the conversions. It would just be a matter of fine tuning the output generated to produce a readable image.
I have tested this my scanning a page from a magazine and saving it as a jpg.
The issue looks to be that the image doesn’t utilize the entire screen. What I would like to see is an image that would display either 1/3 or 1/2 then you can scroll down to see the rest.
Not sure how possible this would be without a firmware update though.

just a simple dang alarm, thats all i ever asked for, just a simple alarm. others say, “oh I wont use’, or its opening the door for other un-needed apps; 1. if you dont use it, then dont use; but i counted about 67percent of those who ansered the community/discussion boards said thats the FIRSt thing that looked for, a simple dang alarm. Think about your focus population/target consumer; WMEN< MOTHERS< NON techs; NO, Gabe, not eVERY one carries a cell phone, and WHY WOULD THEY IF THIS PEEK is so great as you keep pumping on it, is. Gabe, you answer questions sort quickly, without really thinking about the orgininal focused consumer; women, with kids; Isnt that why its in Target, to start?
All this ‘changing pf to jif, and able to download whip-to snip, is NOT what women with kids, or non-techies, like simple elderlies, are looking for. The founder was on MANY MANY tv commercials and web sites stroking its simplecity, and its targeted consumer, NON Techs; but with all this talk but pure-down-to the bones techies, about ripping this and tearing that, we, the real orginal focus grp have left in the wind, with no one lsitening, esp NOT gabe, and no simple, mom-geared alarm clock to get me out of a soccor game, and into the doctors office, on time; without, Gabe, carriying an extra old cellular phone that i dont want, and bought the peek so I wouldnt need….. ah!
