This is pretty funny. Apparently while Consumer reports can’t recommend that folks buy iPhone 4, it is still the highest ranked smartphone by consumer reports. I.e. its the best of a bad lot.
If I think of the major non-iPhone smartphones launched recently my list would be something like:
1. Kin
2. Palm Pre
3. HTC 15 diff’t phones that are really similar + Android
4. Moto Droid
5. Old school BlackBerry – 8800 series/Curve
I’d definitely take the iPhone over the Kin and the HTC line up. I think I’d have taken the Pre, and I’m pretty sure I’d take the Droid… though the squarish lines on the Droid are definitely not for everybody. And if I need something reliable, I’m probably going BlackBerry.
Or if I’m thinking of a no-nonsense combo that just works and is super affordable – I’m doing Peek + a Nokia candy bar.

Hi Dan,
i think you watch the iphone out of the perspective of a technician…
its not perfect hardware, its closed, has no real keyboard etc.
BUT: its easy to use.
Customer buy it, plug it into the computer (after installing itunes which is simple to install) and use it.
they just hit one button (appstore) and can play and play and play and try and download and just have fun with the device.
i think thats the main reason for the success.
we owns a national service center for the major brands here in germany and 90% of problems with smartphones is the UI and problems on configuring the devices. but in the last 2 years i sometimes have to do with customers, i NEVER had an iphone customer who had some questions on how to use the device.
another point in my opinion: for example you get iphone 3gs with contract for 1 euro. that means, you get it for 700 Euro less than without contract.
the palm or htc or samsung devices you get also for one euro, but without contract for 350 euro.
so people say: ohhh, i get 350 euro more (on value) if i buy an iphone
there is some long and interesting discussions on the symbian forums and blogs about why people buy iphone/andoid and not symbian devices.
its always: UI and simple use…
Wolf.
